- In a past life--a better life--Shaun was happy.
He owned a small boutique with his lover and business partner Alan and lived with him in a small flat downtown. They met in high school, when Shaun's father moved the whole family for work, and became fast friends.
It was a quick ride to romance for them; Shaun thought that they would last forever. Nothing about Alan's demeanor changed. He remained loving, attentive and caring even as he was seeing another man and when Shaun eventually found out, there was a horrendous falling out.
Shaun moved away after that, without telling anyone. He disappeared from Hazleton--and showed up three months later drifting face-down in the Columbia river.
When he next regained consciousness he was without corporeal form, unseen by everyone that he passed. Bewildered and unable to make contact with anyone living, Shaun wandered aimlessly through the world for several years until one day, a voice called out to him. And when he responded, the voice did too, pulling Shaun to him.
Little by little, Shaun became closer to Lemuel Ryuk; close enough to lure him where Alan still lived, in the hopes that maybe he could get in touch with him again through Lemmie.
