- Although Joel tells people that he's a widower, the fact is that his wife was placed in an asylum in Portland. Ever since the birth of their son, she had been distraught, saying that he wasn't her son. She even tried to kill him on a few occasions. Joel loved her so much that he didn't want to see it but eventually, even he couldn't pretend she wasn't losing it. She did birth two sons after the first but never trusted them to bond with them either.
