Aldon was having a rough time navigating his emotions at the moment. He seemed to bounce between elated about the new addition to his and Gregg's family and absolutely panic-stricken at the thought of Gregg going out to battle with witches and hunters. On the one hand--puppy! On the other hand--Ryland meeting Gregg! On the other other hand--Gregg fighting again!

He had to shove his hands under his butt and sit on them to avoid chewing all ten fingers off in his anxiety. Aldon was arguably always a high-strung individual but he wasn't often prone to nervousness of this magnitude. He kept jumping at odd noises, at his phone going off from Ryland's texts, from the sound of wind against the window. He kept an ear out for Gregg but he was also trying to keep it together with Ryland and inside he was a ball of nervousness at the thought of them meeting.

It would be like a clash of the Titans, he was pretty sure. Ryland and Gregg. Gregg and Ryland. Aldon in the middle with his frazzled, shattered nerves. It didn't sound like it would make for a good first meeting, not to mention the fact that Gregg was about to join Ken to fight the witch who had taken Alva and refused to give him back....

Whomever was writing Aldon's life story had a VERY active imagination, he had to give it to them.

He wished that he could give up on this life already and just skip ahead to the next. Be a normal human? Be a garlic farmer? All fine with Aldon! He didn't want to be a feral anyway, with feral friends who had all gone berserk. Rae saying he was okay with Alva killing himself. What world was he living in anyway??

That part admittedly still stuck with him in a bad way. Rae's complete lack of concern shook him to the core and he was... He was scared. For Rae. For Alva. For everybody involved in this crazy scheme, to be honest, and even a little bit for Yoojin dating that hunter leader guy, Jem. God, he wished he was out there pulling garlic out of the ground right now! Or harvesting some nacho cheese from a drippy tree!!

Ding-dong~

Their cheerful doorbell rang out. Aldon gave a yell and lept up, nearly wiping out on the caffee table that he stumbled into. Rubbing his shin ruefully, he hobbled to the door and applied his eye to the peephole.

Was it Gregg? With Teddy??

Or was it Ryland, arriving early?!

Market & Fairgrounds / Double the trouble

He couldn't do it.

In the end, faced with the thought of Gregg leaving him FOR GOOD, Aldon didn't tell him a thing about Ryland. Instead, he blabbered something about running into an ex-boyfriend before they left town (though this was actually quite true) and then suddenly had to go to the bathroom, where he hid for nearly twenty minutes, running the taps and dinking his head against the bathroom mirror.

Afterwards, quiet and ashamed of himself, Aldon found ways to hide from Gregg—until the big Double Date. Even now, as he waited by the entrance of the fairgrounds holding Gregg's hand, Aldon couldn't even look at him.

He felt like such a betrayer. A traitor. A skunk and a rat and a snake and every animal under the sun that was sneaky, deceitful, cheating, lying, scummy, low-down good for nothing—

Well, that was how his thoughts were running. He hated himself. Hated his heart for being split, hated that he hadn't been honest with Gregg from the start. Aldon hated that he was taking advantage of Gregg's kindness and love and support, that Gregg had told him his secrets, but Aldon still kept his.

He shuffled a foot awkwardly along the grass, then looked up. Left. Down again. Left. Anywhere but at Gregg, who had to know that something was wrong by now! But Aldon refused to say anything and miserably he wondered if he ever could tell Gregg the truth. Or would his secret consume him? Would it split them apart quicker than the secret itself?

"AH! There they are!"

Relief was never more evident in Aldon's voice as he pointed to the tall blond-haired man coming their way. He was holding hands with someone equally tall with a lot of curly hair and, even at a distance, very bright eyes. Aldon stared at his outfit. Then he looked down at his own outfit, which was similarly bright, colorful, attention-grabbing. But Aldon dressed like this so that they would be conspicuous, and therefore harder to secretly murder!

Despite his inner turmoil, he grinned as widely as he could when Ken's date grinned at him, finding his smile infectious even from a distance.

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't fair that no matter how hard Aldon tried to find a solution, Ry shot him down immediately. It was always Ry doing the leaving, wasn't it? Any time he didn't like something, he left. He had to be the one breaking things off all the time. First, it was because Aldon didn't say he loved him. Then when he DID say he loved Ryland, it wasn't ENOUGH. He had to love Ryland all the time, always, and only him.

Why was it NEVER ENOUGH? Aldon felt like the bar kept getting higher and higher, and that whatever he did to please Ryland was never enough because Ryland kept wanting more. More more more. Aldon couldn't do anything right.

This time, Aldon tried. He really did and he didn't know what more he could have done. It wasn't his fault that he loved two people. It wasn't his fault that Gregg came into his life just when Ryland walked out. It wasn't Gregg's fault that he slotted so perfectly into the little piece of Aldon's heart that had always wandered.

In fact, if Ryland hadn't walked out, there would have been no Gregg! If Ry had stuck it out with him, Aldon never would have turned to another man.

He nursed his wounds like a pathetic dog after he hung up, curled up in the back of the RV as it drove down the highway to nowhere. Sobbing like a bitch, Rae would have said, and he probably would have smacked Aldon upside the head. Gregg was up front. It was a small RV because neither of them were rich, but they made do with what they had. Life out here was carefree, really. When they were hungry, they ate. When they were thirsty, they drank. And at night, they curled up together and it just felt right.

But there was always something missing. Aldon felt Ryland's absence like a phantom limb, even though the memories were blocked from his mind. He reached for a hand that wasn't there and he turned to say silly things to empty space. He saw a strawberry and thought of someone whose face he couldn't even bring to the forefront of his mind. And he understood that it was hard for Ryland to deal with his feelings but why couldn't Ryland try? At least try to work with the complicated feelings that Aldon had? What did they have to lose by trying?

Aldon swallowed back the hurt and he tried not to play the victim, but it was hard not to when he felt so dispirited and so beaten. People always said that he had the victim card in his back pocket. Maybe they were right. Actually, they were right. He did. He played into the image of the hurt puppy because he could and because it worked. People seemed to want to baby him and Lord, he let them.

But this time--THIS TIME! This time it wasn't about being babied!

Aldon sniffed. He scrubbed a hand over his red-rimmed eyes because he didn't want Gregg to see that he'd been crying and then he turned his face into the pillow. Aldon's hand clenched into fists around the sheets as he kicked out a foot violently, sending the RV rocking slightly on its wheels. Werewolf strength. Did fuck all for his broken heart. Werewolf senses--why bother when he only felt everything so acutely?

There was no way that Ryland claimed to know Aldon loved him, and then doubted that same love. Love was love. It didn't discriminate and it didn't take sides. Sometimes it wasn't as easy as 1+1=2. Sometimes another 1 worked himself into the equation and then everything was bumped around and jostled out of place.

The pain shredded him up from the inside-out, forming a deep, physical ache. Ryland broke up with him a lot in the past but this time it felt real. This time Aldon bared his heart and his soul and was rejected on the basis of his love not being enough. He had never been found so lacking before, and it destroyed him to know that Ryland doubted him. Looked him right in the eye and doubted him. Told him he loved him, then told him to never come back.

Aldon broke free of the pillow when his vision started to swim again--this time from lack of air as he began to pass out. He stared at the little door that separated the car part of the RV from the back and his field of view blurred horribly. "Gregg...!" The RV shook again as he sprang from the bed and burst through the small separating door and threw himself onto Gregg, wet-eyed and choking on his own hurt and not caring if they careened into a ditch because of his recklessness.

Mostly... mostly he hurt because Ryland hurt and that was no one's fault but his own. And he knew it.

Hi

I have a lot of old messages from you in my phone.

But I'm sorry... I don't know who you are. I know it sounds crazy but i really can't remember you.

Do you know what's going on? I thought maybe they're from the guy who owned this phone before me.

Should I delete these messages?

"Hey hey that's my stop!" Aldon tugged frantically on the cord as the bus driver almost missed his stop, with a suitcase and two gym bags bumping around by his legs. As the bus ground to a halt, he almost pitched head over heels out into the aisle. As it was, he barely got his legs untangled and made an ungainly exit off of the bus.

GEEZ! Was the guy asleep at the wheel or something? Aldon dusted himself off, grumbling, and then rearranged the bags to sit more securely over his shoulders. He extended the handle on the suitcase and hauled himself—and everything he deemed important—away from the bus stop. Was this where Gregg wanted to meet? Aldon looked around, then down at his phone, scrolling up and down through messages.

Yes. This was where Gregg wanted to meet... sort of. But the actual location was half a block off. Sighing dramatically even though nobody was around to hear it, or to sympathize with his plight, Aldon set off at a determined pace.

It was finally time to blow this popsicle stand. Time to leave Hazleton, like he always declared he would, but never did. Deep down, Aldon was afraid. He'd grown up in a big, loving family; he was accustomed to being surrounded by friends, family and pack members. He was the most social of social creatures and now, to have to go on the run, it was a frightening prospect.

He had Gregg, of course. That was the one great comfort in all of this. Aldon knew that he had to protect Gregg, and those he loved, and if that meant silently sneaking out of Hazleton, into Portland, and across the country to Florida, then... fine. He could do this! Like he said, it would be like a long, unplanned road trip. Only instead of seeing the sights, he and Gregg would be 'on the lam' from hunters. And from members of his own pack, who would sooner tear Gregg from limb to limb for what he used to be. Tensions remained high after Andrew was assassinated and hunters were regarded as 'must-kill' targets right now.

It was a little while before Aldon managed to get to the meeting place, and as soon as he caught sight of Gregg off in the distance, his steps quickened. Despite the fear of the unknown weighing on him, and his reluctance to leave everyone behind, Aldon couldn't keep himself from beaming. "Gregg!" He waved enthusiastically (as he was wont to) and hastened over so that he could throw himself, two gym bags and a suitcase all at Gregg.

"OOF!"

Aldon's foot caught on a crack in the sidewalk and he came to a stumbling halt, reaching out to wrap his arms around a pole. For a second he stared blankly at the house in front of him, heart thudding as painfully as the shoulder that collided with the pole. The last thing that he remembered was sneaking in through the barrier in the suburbs, and leaping into the arms of immense, dense fog.

Then, the next thing he knew... he was...

"Where the hell am I?!"

With a sudden burst of frenetic energy, Aldon shoved off from the pole and wheeled around on his heels, looking wildly left and right. A car passed by idly. Overhead, a bird flitted past, letting out a cheerful, soft chirrup. Aldon stood frozen for several long moments, breathing hard, and then let out a confused sound--a noise that was more wolf than human--before jerkily directing his steps down the street.

There was one place that he knew was safe. There was one home that even in his befuddled state, his instincts led him toward.

Hardly aware of his surroundings as he walked, Aldon tried to piece together the gaps in his memory but all he managed to achieve was frustration. It was as if someone had wiped his mind clean, from the time that he entered the mist to his abrupt exit out in the Hazleton neighborhoods. As tall buildings loomed up, however, a sense of familiarity began to soothe his frazzled nerves. He breathed out his confusion and uncertainty as he pushed open the lobby doors of Ryland's building and it was a short elevator ride up to his floor and to his door.

"RYLAND!"

Aldon knocked sharply on the door with his knuckles, never content to make an entrance the old-fashioned, normal--quiet--way. Something inside was pushing and pushing, as though an invisible hand was shoving at him and urging him towards the inside of the apartment. Impatiently he knocked again, calling out for Ryland--home.

With a heavy thud, Aldon hit the ground and skidded a little ways. His body left a furrow in the ground. Before he could recover, Josh was on him, teeth snapping inches from his eye. Aldon let out a shrill whine—a sound of defeat—and cringed, fully expecting Josh to tear out his throat the way he'd gone after those rabbits and coyotes. He genuinely thought that he was going to die.

All Josh did, however, was snarl and growl at him. Then, suddenly, the weight of his body left Aldon. For a few more tense moments, Aldon played dead. It worked better against bears than wolves, but he didn't want to take his chances annoying an already irate feral. Sure, he was feral too, but he wasn't anywhere near as savage as Rae or Josh.

"Traitor!" Josh spat acidly at him.

Aldon shifted back quickly and laid naked in the loam, bleeding, scratched and bitten. He was sore all over and he felt extremely hard done by. Couldn't Josh have taken it easy on him? They were long-time childhood best friends, for Christ's sake! Aldon slowly sat up and inspected a bite mark on his arm, glad that he was already a feral. If not, he would've been in for a hell of a long night—longer than this one was turning out to be!

"I'm not a traitor!" He protested, avoiding Josh's gaze. Josh was pacing furiously, clearly agitated. Aldon didn't like his chances of not getting kicked in the face, so he made a small target of himself. "I was stopping you from committing murder!"

"He would've deserved it. That filthy fox and his little lackey witch!"

Aldon mumbled something to his own arm. Personally he thought that nothing was worth a murder rap, but clearly Josh believed otherwise.

"What's that?" Josh snapped, stopping close to him and causing him to flinch.

"Rae wouldn't want you to hurt Alva..." Aldon ducked like Josh was going to smash a fist into the top of his head. Then he started up so suddenly that he startled Josh. "RAE! HE'S STILL BACK THERE!" Then, before Josh could react, Aldon was off like a lightning bolt, a streak of white, paws churning the ground. He dashed through the woods, back the way he'd come, until he burst on through to the coyote den where he had last seen Rae. Sure enough, Rae was still there, and Aldon hastily scrambled over to him to check him out.

"Rae? Rae!" He shook Rae.

"What's wrong with him?" Josh's sharp voice followed behind him.

"He's... just all frozen." Aldon sat beside Rae, baffled. "What'd the witch do to him?" Rae looked uninjured but he was clearly not unharmed. That witch did something to him—Aldon just didn't know what. "What do we do Josh?"

"...drag him back to the truck, you idiot," Josh said impatiently, reaching down to grab one of Rae's arms. "Come on. We'll carry him between us."

"O-okay..." Aldon did likewise, taking Rae's other arm and hoisting him up. He cast a look around, at the three coyote corpses. Two were mangled; one, a large male, was severely injured. Probably dead. It wasn't moving. Aldon studied it worriedly, but Josh was already moving and he had to hurry to keep up before Josh yelled at him. Aldon couldn't stand being yelled at—especially by Josh, whose creative insults always cut deep.

"You think Ry's okay?"

"I don't care."

"..." Aldon shut his trap and kept on walking. He cared! The faster they got Rae to the truck, the sooner he could get back into town to check on Ryland. Aldon wanted to find the witch, too, but not to kill him like Josh. He just wanted to make sure that guy didn't do anything to hurt Ryland! Aldon wasn't the murdering type, but he was still a wolf and still protective of the people he loved.
