It would have been a lot easier if they had a fox type demon around but as it was, they were just going to have to let Eligos force the thing out--again. Moxxie wrung his hands together as he took his place across from Millie. Oh, he just knew they were going to be fighting a fox the size of a building... But nothing seemed to happen and Eligos cursed as he shook the stone in annoyance, wondering why the fuck his power wasn't working. He was a DUKE, he reminded them all. Not that it meant much to Moxxie. All he really wanted was for things to go back to some semblance of normalcy. And that his wishes with Millie would come true. He had noticed her looking at the coins they tossed in the fountain--it left a warm aura wrapped around his heart.

"Oh!"

He saw it now, too--it was actually tiny! How could it be so TINY? Swallowing hard, he did his best to oblige his wife's orders, attempting to catch it. But it was so small that it was hard to get a real idea where it was and on top of it, it was FAST. As Moxxie attempted to grasp it, it jumped and ran and Eligos shouted, too, shouted at Moxxie to not let it get past him.

"I-I'm trying!" he shouted back, doing his best to-- Squish.

"Ah. Um. Oh."

He had felt it. The way its little body... crushed under his foot as he carelessly stepped on it.

Immediately, he turned to be sick in the grass.

"Oh..." Well that was... anti-climactic. Millie stood there feeling a little stunned while Moxxie turned right around and threw up on the grass behind him. She could see the faintest, tiniest blood stain by where his foot used to be, all that remained of the fox stone's guardian. Little sneaky thing, trying to run off on them.

But...

She was unsettled.

The last guardian almost killed them. And this one was just a small, tiny, barely visible, harmless little fox? Something didn't add up here; something wasn't right. She ran over to rub Moxxie's back and to whisper soothing things into his ear, but the hairs at the back of her neck prickled and stood all on end. It was just...

She remembered an old wives' tale about fox guardians. About how tricky they were. About how they could bring nine years of bad luck if anyone sought to harm them, and... stepping on them definitely counted as 'harming them.' "It's all right, honey. You did good, Moxxie." She smoothed back his hair and kept it out of his eyes (and mouth).

"Boss? Are we done here? Maybe I'd better take Moxxie back inside..." And get him something cool to drink, to soothe his obviously frazzled nerves.

Eligos laughed at first. This was just too easy! Moxxie actually stepped on the stupid thing! Hahahaha! And now it was dead--nothing but a smear in the grass. And Moxxie, being typical Moxxie, ended up sick because he was a terrible imp and hated hurting things. But after the laughter died down, Eligos found himself... unsettled. And when he met Millie's gaze, he was pretty sure she was thinking something along the same lines.

"Yeah..." But his tone was distracted as he looked around the garden and the fountain. A cold wind blew through, hard enough to stir the foliage shaped like various animals. He swore one looked like a fox, even. Eligos crossed his arms, trying to appear tough while also warding off the chill that was sinking into his bones.

"Mils?" he said. "Something doesn't feel right."

He turned his attention back to the pair and moved over to where the smear had been left. He bent down and moved Moxxie's foot aside to study what had been smashed. Touched the blood with two fingers, the warm little body beneath that had been so easily smashed. There was magic in it.

"Boss?" Moxxie questioned, one hand over his mouth to keep himself from being sick again.

Then he saw it--a streak of black night sky and stars--it came at Moxxie and Eligos shoved him--and Millie by proxy--aside just as an actual horse fucking sized fox the color of the night sky appeared. Its long, tall ears stood back against its skull and its teeth were bared, wrapped around Eligos' arm.

"Shit," he said through gritted teeth. "Who the fuck are you? That thing's mama?"

Oh.

Fuck.

Millie didn't see the streak of black lightning but she sure felt it! Tumbling roughly onto the grass with Moxxie, she instinctively rolled to protect him by placing her body between him and anything harmful. But when she looked up, it had Eligos caught between its teeth, tails thrashing the air furiously. It was pissed off, and it wasn't fooling around.

"Boss!" She leapt to her feet, quick as anything, and whipped out her dual blades. Millie launched herself into the air and struck it right in the hind leg, slashing mindlessly until it released Eligos with a pained hiss, only to come after her. "Come at me, you bitch!" Her eyes glowed black and her hair... moved. Of its own accord. The long strands twisted together, writhing and lashing about angrily, into snake-like formations.

"Cover your eyes Moxxie!" It was about to get a little violent out here.

Oh whoa shit.

If it weren't for Millie being right there, Moxxie might have been knocked right onto his ass at the sight of the enormous, otherworldly fox. She was clearly angry and probably exactly what Eligos thought she was. Mama. Or something like that. A creator of the little fox. Something... way different than the thing that Moxxie had accidentally killed.

And it meant for those gnashing teeth to sink into him. He stared even as Millie rolled him into the grass to keep him safe. Eligos was attempting to get his hands on his gun in his holster to get the thing off him, saying something like, "Bitch don't even start with me" or some Eligos-like thing but Moxxie was so stunned he could hardly get his short-circuiting brain to think.

Not Millie, though! Never Millie. She sprang up, quick as lightning herself, sinking blades into the fox's back leg and causing it to finally let go of Eligos. And now... now it was training its hardened gaze on Millie, growling and baring sharp, sharp teeth.

"Millie!"

But she was telling him to close his eyes and he knew what that meant. Especially combined with how her hair was moving. Curling up, he covered both eyes with both hands, trusting her implicitly.

"Sssstupid fox!" Millie hissed--literally hissed. Her hair extended longer and longer, snaking along the ground and winding around the fox guardian's four legs, tripping it up. "I will sssshow you what happensss when you messss with Diassssa." Sinuous as a snake, she ran gracefully toward the fox. One of its tails lashed toward her but she dodged it nimbly side-ways and brought her blade down onto it, partially severing it.

The fox roared in pain. But with its legs trapped by Millie's hair, all it could do was wobble awkwardly. Though it attempted to bite the hair off, to sever it, more strands wound about it. "Eligossss. There!" In all the thrashing that the fox did, it exposed its weak spot, right at the nape of its neck where the dense, black fur was thickest. She saw the barest glimmer of its mana heart, the spot where magic flowed the strongest through it, forming the basis of its powers.

"Quickly! Before it getsss away!" Millie was doing her best to hold on to it, dragging her heels into the ground as the fox pulled and tugged viciously against her. It seemed to know better than to look her in the eyes, though, and steadfastly avoided staring directly at her. Clever thing. But Eligos was no mean shot; Millie held on, to give him a chance at a clean shot.

By this point, Eligos had his gun out and at the ready but he was sorta half running around the stupid beast to get a good lock on it. That was, until Millie called out to him and he saw it--glittering for just a moment, a weakness. And with the thing suitably held down and distracted by Millie, he couldn't get a better opportunity. Licking his lips, he lowered himself to line up the shot.

"Aha!"

He aimed, squeezed the trigger, and the bullet hit true. If there was one thing Eligos was actually good at, it was fucking shooting. (Which was weird for a demon in human eyes but what the fuck ever, guns were invented by demons!)

The fox demon--the ninetails that they should have expected, really--howled in anguish so loudly that from an upstairs balcony, Eligos heard the incubus prince shout down, "What on earth is happening?!"

Eligos grinned as he lifted his gun and rested it against his shoulder.

"Bitch ain't getting back up from that." He splashed some of the fountain water on Moxxie. "Stop cowering, Mox. It's over."

Taking in a breath, he came around to place a boot on the dead ninetails. "Damn, Mils, you really brought your A game today." He gave her a nice slap on the back. "Real proud of you."

"Thanks boss!" Millie wiped her brow, pleased that the ordeal was over. And nobody got hurt! Except Eligos, on the arm where the fox guardian had bitten him, but he seemed in high spirits regardless. That was one of the nice things about him; Eligos wasn't the type to whine or moan or complain about a little flesh wound. Unless he thought he could get something out of it, which usually he didn't. Not with Millie, anyway!

She hurried over to Moxxie and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Moxxie honey, it's okay. We killed it!" Millie beamed down at him and helped him uncurl off the grass. "That was easier than last time!"

"Oh no, did we miss all the fun?" The other annoying voice called down from an upstairs window, sounding disappointed.

"Hmph. Should've let that fox eat them," Millie grumbled as she slid an arm around Moxxie. "Come on baby. Let's get you back inside and get you something to settle those nerves, hm?"

Eligos was laughing his head off, almost like he didn't even notice the gushing wound in his arm. At least, not at first. He was too busy flashing his middle finger at the dead fox demon and gloating about their win. As much as Moxxie wanted the ordeal to stay over, a part of him thought Eligos would deserve it if the thing woke up and gave him another bite.

It did not.

Sighing and holding his stomach, Moxxie shook his head. Another job where he had been useless! But... Millie didn't seem to care and Eligos... he didn't matter. He just smiled at Millie, lovesick. She was too amazing and he knew it. Everything about her was magical...

"Oh, there might be some golden tea left," he said as Millie led the way back inside. Eligos stayed behind for a moment longer--taking photos of the dead thing before he followed behind them, holding onto his arm and moaning that somebody was going to have to patch him up.
