The famed Miraju Grottoes didn't look like much. Honestly, they looked like caves. Then again, most caves looked like caves, so it wasn't saying much. Tsuyoi stood at the base of the path leading up to the mountains with hands on hips and a determined expression on his face. He wasn't here to admire the sheer cliffs or the natural beauty of the rocky formations around him, or how each cave entrance yawned like giant mouths, waiting to swallow someone up.

He was here on a Mission, and that Mission--capital M--was to find a ghost and write a ballad about it. Possibly it would have a tragic past, or some gruesome story about its passing, that he could weave into a spellbinding story which would catapult him to fame in the public's eyes. In his mind, anyway, that was the end game. How or where he would find the ghost? Well, according to the stories he'd been hearing, these grottoes were positively riddled with ghost pokemon.

One of them had to have a tragic past!

Having shifted and flown all the way here, he was a bit tired but he still walked at his usual brisk pace, not knowing any other speed except "full tilt." Tsuyoi wanted to be in and out before night fell so that he could fly back to the inn that he'd been staying at. It was a picturesque little cabin-in-the-woods type of place, very pretty and cozy, but hardly the sort of place to inspire epic ballads. Nobody wrote meaningful songs about being happy and well-fed and content! All of the most poignant songs and poems were about suffering, pain, heartbreak, deep melancholy.

Granted, Tsuyoi had no experience in any of those four things--which was why he wanted a ghost to tell him about them! His jaw set in a determined way as he marched himself up the path, arms swinging, satchel swinging, feather swinging in his cap, harp at his hip swinging. Many things swung and jiggled and bounced on his person as his energetic pace led him up to the first of a series of openings in the mountainside.

Ran breathed in the fresh mountain air, hands on her hips as she looked ahead at the series of cave entrances. She moved her index finger back and forth between the openings, mumbling a rhyme to herself in an attempt to choose which one to enter.

"And. You. Are. It!" She stopped, pointing toward the mouth of one of the caves. Satisfied, she picked her pack back up and headed in.

There was a particular species of luminous mushrooms that only grew inside the Miraju Grottoes caves. They weren't used as components in very many of her medicines, but she'd recently run out of the few she had using them in a warding spell for a customer. She seemed to be getting more and more customers lately who were coming to her for more spirit medium related work than herbal or medical needs. She wasn't complaining, though, as this particular brand of clientele paid well and the work was well within her capabilites.

As she ventured further into the cave, she could feel the presence of various spirits, their voices whispering unintelligibly in her head. Before she could make it much further, she saw a boy a ways ahead of her, joyfully trotting through the cave.

"Hello there!" Ran called out with a slight wave as she approached, trying not to startle the young man. She wondered what one as young as him was doing in a place like this.

The mouth of the cave offered no immediate horrors, so Tsuyoi was buoyed by the fact that he'd been very brave to come here all alone. He wished that he could've brought his best friend along with him, but there had been no time! Searching for Sasashi would waste valuable minutes, and Tsuyoi was such an impatient person.

He tried to make himself look as big as possible, before remembering that ghosts didn't care about size. That was for ursaring and bewears. So then he tried to make a small target of himself, in case they came flocking, but something sounded behind him and he started. Whirling around--numerous supplies and items on his body whirling chaotically with him--he saw a lady near the entrance.

"Ah-!" Tsuyoi cut his exclamation of surprise short. There weren't just ghosts here! Dangerous pokemon lurked deep within too! "Ma'am!" Tsuyoi hurried back to her. She didn't look scared, but she was alone and something about that didn't sit right with him. "Are you lost ma'am? You shouldn't be here all alone!"

Never mind that... er... he was here all alone. And without a partner for protection! But he had his trusty spell tags and, in a pinch, very fast running legs.

Ran smiled at the young man's concern, and at the jangling baubles hanging off of him. She appreciated his worry, but thought that he was probably better off worrying about himself. At the commotion, her Cubone, Tōchi, poked his head out of her bag and looked at the boy over her shoulder. Ran brought a hand up to scratch at the fur just under his skull helmet.

"Oh no, I'm not lost. I'm here to look for mushrooms to make medicine." As Tōchi crawled all the way out of her backpack, she plucked him off her shoulder and held him in her arms, "I've got a partner Pokémon if things get sticky." For how much of a crybaby the Cubone was, he was surprisingly helpful in a battle.

"I'm more curious as to what someone as young as you is doing here..." She examined the various supplies strapped around him curiously, trying to discern their purpose.

"Oh... Oh!" He thought that she was alone, but it turned out that she had a pokemon of her own! Tsuyoi's eyes widened at the sight of the cubone, which was known to be a mournful, lonely pokemon. At least, that was how they were described in his textbooks. And the texts said that they wore the skulls of their mothers--so was this one doing the same with its own mother's skull?!

Tsuyoi wondered what it looked like under the mask, but had the presence of mind not to blurt out his question. Maybe... maybe he'd just read about it later.

The lady's explanation about mushrooms sounded plausible; the grottoes were damp and all sorts of ingredients for spells and potions could be sourced here. As for himself... "I'm... looking for... ghosts... I'm hoping to talk to one."

Tsuyoi scratched the tip of his nose in slight embarrassment, knowing how silly he might have sounded. People told him all the time that his crazy ideas and foolish notions were childish, but still! "Maybe we can go together? If that's okay with you?" She had that pokemon partner and it did look pretty strong! Not that Tsuyoi was scared or anything! He was just... err... escorting her...

The young man seemed interested in Tōchi, and the Cubone seemed just as interested in him, leaning forward to gently pick up his scent. Ran smiled to herself. It was a bit unusual for him to take an interest in people, so it must have meant he felt safe around the boy.

"Ghosts, hm? In that case... it might be good for us to go together," she nodded, "I can sense and communicate with ghosts, so I might be able to help you find what you're looking for." She tapped her temple to indicate her spirit senses, "Oh, but where are my manners? My name is Ran. And this little fellas name is Tōchi." She patted the Cubone on the head.

"So! Where should we start our search for ghosts? And the mushrooms, too, I suppose." She laughed a bit at being sidetracked by the young man's earnestness.

"You can talk to ghosts?!" Tsuyoi almost did a little dance of excitement--here was the exact person who could help him find and communicate with a ghost! It made him wonder if she was a seer or a medium, but she looked fairly normal. She wasn't wearing any of the traditional garbs that he associated with mediums, although she did have a pokemon commonly associated with them.

She wasn't creepy, though! The few times he'd glimpsed a medium, he got goosebumps. There was always something off about them, that he couldn't quite put his finger on. He bowed politely to Ran as she introduced herself, and then dared to give Tōchi a gingerly pat on the head--bone mask?--since the little cubone appeared friendly toward him.

"I'm Tsuyoi, of Float Isle!" He began to venture further into the cave, buoyed by the fact that he was even closer now to finding a tragic ghost. "Let's go this way, I think this leads into some of the other caves. What kinds of mushrooms are you looking for? My best friend's mom says there are lots of poisonous ones in here, so we have to be careful."
